Urban Regeneration

Pub in SunderlandThe processes of urban renewal or regeneration are complex, involving the social, cultural, economic and political dynamics of the city linked to the rejuvenation of the physical and built environment. Staff in the Sustainable Cities Research Institute have substantial experience of undertaking research and consultancy into a wide variety of urban regeneration problems and issues. For example, recent projects have included an investigation of the processes of financial inclusion and possible courses of action, an evaluation of the Governmentís Sure Start programme in Newcastle, and research to map the nature of migrant labour in the North East construction industry. The Institute was part of a consortium carrying out the national evaluation of the New Deal for Communities which was the Governmentís key programme to tackle multiple deprivation by giving some of the poorest communities in the UK the resources to tackle their problems in an intensive and coordinated way.
More information on these and other projects may be found HERE

Walkers on a Cycle Route SCRI researchers work closely with staff in the School of the Built Environment and are therefore able to draw upon extensive expertise in construction, surveying, property development, estate management, building services, architecture and planning to enable the Institute to undertake research and consultancy in all aspects of urban regeneration.
